During production of The Haunting (1999), the crew actually played the sound effects of creaks and goans of the house over speakers while the actors were doing the scary scenes. They didn't know what they were about to hear, so reactions to the noises are genuine.
They also actually decapitated a stunt man during the scene in the fireplace because it gave the actors very real reactions of shock. Just joshin'...

They should have decapitated that stuntman - it would have made for a better movie!
The original is fantastic however.
