The reason Han Solo was frozen in carbonite was because George Lucas was unsure Harrison Ford would return to play the character in the third film. Ford wanted Han Solo killed off and felt his character had already played out his role, but Lucas had to convince him that Solo was still important to the story.
Thank GOD Lucas was so persuasive!!! Where would we be today if Han Solo had died? We'd be a sad society, that's for sure.
