I Heart the End of the World...

I think I need therapy. I can't get enough of apocalyptic flicks. Whether it's natural disasters, aliens, zombies, or deadly viruses, I'm in. So I've decided to share some of my favies. Here goes...

The Road (2009)

I missed this one in theaters and had to wait an eternity to watch it on DVD. It was worth the wait. The story follows a man and his son who have survived a mystery apocalypse. They are travelling South through a dismal, dark, empty world. They are hungry, exhausted, sick and fighting the elements and other dangerous cannibalistic survivors.

This movie really made me feel something. A mixture of sadness, fear and hopelessness were all brewing inside me the entire way through. I also really enjoyed the religious symbolism that was presented to the audience. It's a downer of a movie, but I highly recommend if you're also into the post-apocalyptic tales.

I Am Legend (2007)

Once in a while a movie comes along that makes me completely shite my pants. I Am Legend is one of those movies. From the opening scene to the final credits, I was fully enthralled. The concept that the cure for cancer becomes the reason for a deadly outbreak is genius. Sad, but genius.

And so we follow one man's journey of survival in a deserted cityscape. It's just Robert Neville (Will Smith) and his dog... oh and tons of mofo scary infected peeps roaming the city at night. Daytime hours are cool, but when night comes, it's time to lock the freaking doors. I cannot deal with the sounds the infected make while running around in the darkness...

This scene was beyond suspenseful for me. Watching Neville prepare for nightfall then curling up in the batchtub. *shudder*  What a terrifying existence. Great movie.

The Day After Tomorrow (2004)

Weather. It's terrifying. Everyone knows the icecaps are melting... this movie was a warning to all people of Earth. Stop polluting, f*ckers!

Jack Hall (Dennis Quaid) is a scientist who does lots of science. He's smart and knows something no one else seems to know. The ocean current is about to change due to global warming and now we're all gonna die.

The climate change is sudden and in a short period of time the Northern Hemisphere is thrust into a new ice age. The real story though is about a father on a journey to save his son. And me likey the Jakey. Jake Gyllenhaal that is. It's over-the-top in many aspects, but still a great flick in my books.

Independence Day (1996)

I have so many favie alien movies, but this gem is definitely in my top 5. The special effects were awesome, and I pretty much love anything that Will Smith does.

If aliens do exist, I don't imagine them to be "I come in peace" individuals. I think when if aliens come to visit us one day, they're takin' over. End of story. I can tell you one thing though... I won't be waving 'Welcome to Earth' signs on top of a building. I'll be hiding out in my bunker, complete with projector, popcorn and all my favie apocalypse films, quietly muttering 'I told you so' under my breath for years.

Zombieland (2009)

I really fell in love with the zombie/comedy genre when I watched Shaun of the Dead (2004) - also a great zombie apocalypse flick! Zombieland was a fun romp through a zombie filled world. Now if I were actually making my way through this world, you'd probably find me holed up with Bill Murray watchin' Groundhog Day (1993) on repeat.

Anyone else out there heart the end of the world too?

I've never seen The Road. :( But I want to.

I Am Legend totally made me cry my heart out.

I liked The Day After Tomorrow, but I can't said I loved it. Gyllenhaal is hot, though, so that's a plus right there. :)

Independence Day remains one of my favorite alien movies of all time!

And Zombieland was just amazing.

Great, great choices. :P

Ha! I'm reading this post as I watch The Book of Eli, another end of world flick. All good choices you have, but my favorite is Children of Men, when the world is on the verge of extinction because women can't have babies anymore. They can almost literally countdown to the end of humanity.
