Kirsten Dunst in Melancholia

Controversial filmmaker Lars Von Trier is bringing us a new drama that has totally peaked my interest. Check out the synops:

Two sisters find their relationship challenged as a nearby planet threatens to collide into the Earth. [IMDB]

Wow. It sounds like a super drama mixed with a Jerry Bruckheimer movie. Although it sounds totally bizarre, I think it will be an interesting take on the apocalyptic genre, focusing more on the human side of things, how relationships would evolve knowing it's the end, etc etc insert deep thoughts here.

It also stars Charlotte Gainsburg, Kiefer Sutherland, John Hurt, and both Stellan and Alexander Skarsgard (yummm).

Conspiracy theorists who are all about the Planet Nibiru theory are probably all up in a huff over this, as their lunatic ravings are now part of mainstream film. And since I'm gullible as all hell, I probably won't sleep well after seeing this.

Oh well, check out the trailer. What do you think? Too weird? Good concept?

Ewan McGregor's (aka my husband's) New Disaster Flick:The Impossible

So during my bi-monthly stalk-a-thon of Ewan McGregor, I noticed that my favie romantic leading man is taking on a new type of flick. THE DISTASTER GENRE! Ooooh! You all know how we love the end of the world, so this oughta be good. Ok it's not exactly the end of the world, but it's the first theatrical big budget adaptation of the 2004 tsunami.

An account of a family caught, with tens of thousands of strangers, in the mayhem of one of the worst natural catastrophes of our time. [IMDB]

It also stars Naomi Watts, I'm assuming as the wifey. Great, now I have to hate her too. I'm getting exhausted with my jealous hatred of Ewan's leading ladies. Anyways, The Impossible comes out in 2011, and although I get to stare at my fantasy-hubby, probably all wet and sexy and dirty and hero-ish, I might have a hard time with it since I have monthly nightmares about tsunamis and tidal waves. Weird, I know. But what's weirder is that I always survive in my dream, by plugging my nose. It's as easy as that.

How do you feel about this story being made into (another) film? Will you see it? Is it too soon for this movie? Like when it was waaayy too soon for United 93 or World Trade Centre? Is it in bad taste?

Ewan, will you marry me?

Monsters! (but really it's aliens)

Shucks, we love alien invasions and apocalypses (plural?) and all those fun things. So here's another one to satiate our sick taste in films! MONSTERS! OOOHHH!!

"Six years ago NASA discovered the possibility of alien life within our solar system. A probe was launched to collect samples, but crashed upon re-entry over Central America. Soon after, new life forms began to appear and half of Mexico was quarantined as an INFECTED ZONE. Today, the American and Mexican military still struggle to contain "the creatures"...... Our story begins when a US journalist agrees to escort a shaken tourist through the infected zone in Mexico to the safety of the US border." Why, thanks IMDB! You're so helpful.

I'm super intrigued by this one, even though the trailer barely gives you a single glimpse of the title character. Haha get it? Cuz it's called Monsters.

I love me a good giant destructive force - such as the building-tramplin' jerk from Cloverfield, or some old fashioned Godzilla. This one will surely make me squirm, and I'll like it.

The film stars Whitney Able and Scoot McNairy. No, I didn't make those names up. Someone out there is actually named Scoot. And since I don't know who these actors are, I will assume you don't know either. So there.

It seems like there'll be a smidge of first person perspective in this one, which y'all know we love. I think we might love that style so much because we're  just so damn obsessed with movies that we wanna feel like we're IN them. And this style gives us that feeling. Aaaannd I officially need therapy after reading that sentence back to myself.

You're judging me, I know you are. You know what? I don't care. I don't need help. I'm not delusional, I'm just creative. What matters is that I'm happy with myself, and I'm perfectly content to come home from a long day at Hogwarts and curl up in Home Tree every night (aka a hammock in my closet).

"Skyline" Increases My Fears of Alien Invasion (but secretly I love it)

Oh. Sweet. Jesus. Remember how Chanty hearts the end of the world? Well she's gonna love this puppy right here. And by puppy I mean shit-inducing alien flick that's coming this November.

After a late night party, a group of friends are awoken in the dead of the night by an eerie light beaming through the window. Like moths to a flame, the light source is drawing people outside before they suddenly vanish into the air. They soon discover an otherwordly force is swallowing the entire human population off the face of the earth. Now our band of survivors must fight for their lives as the world unravels around them. [IMDB]

It was a total hoot showing this teaser to Chantale. I watched her go through the gambit of emotion. First excitement at the alien spacecrafts... then horror and wide eyes, then gasping and hands over her mouth, then as the trailer drew to a close, a shriek -- "It's PEEEOOOPPLE!"

The film stars Eric Balfour (known best by us from Six Feet Under), Scottie Thompson (from a bunch of TV shows we don't watch), David Zayas (some guy who looks like Jon Favreau), and a bunch of other people I don't know. But that doesn't bother me. It adds to the believability factor.

Anyways, watch this and tell me if you squirm.

I Heart the End of the World...

I think I need therapy. I can't get enough of apocalyptic flicks. Whether it's natural disasters, aliens, zombies, or deadly viruses, I'm in. So I've decided to share some of my favies. Here goes...

The Road (2009)

I missed this one in theaters and had to wait an eternity to watch it on DVD. It was worth the wait. The story follows a man and his son who have survived a mystery apocalypse. They are travelling South through a dismal, dark, empty world. They are hungry, exhausted, sick and fighting the elements and other dangerous cannibalistic survivors.

This movie really made me feel something. A mixture of sadness, fear and hopelessness were all brewing inside me the entire way through. I also really enjoyed the religious symbolism that was presented to the audience. It's a downer of a movie, but I highly recommend if you're also into the post-apocalyptic tales.

I Am Legend (2007)

Once in a while a movie comes along that makes me completely shite my pants. I Am Legend is one of those movies. From the opening scene to the final credits, I was fully enthralled. The concept that the cure for cancer becomes the reason for a deadly outbreak is genius. Sad, but genius.

And so we follow one man's journey of survival in a deserted cityscape. It's just Robert Neville (Will Smith) and his dog... oh and tons of mofo scary infected peeps roaming the city at night. Daytime hours are cool, but when night comes, it's time to lock the freaking doors. I cannot deal with the sounds the infected make while running around in the darkness...

This scene was beyond suspenseful for me. Watching Neville prepare for nightfall then curling up in the batchtub. *shudder*  What a terrifying existence. Great movie.

The Day After Tomorrow (2004)

Weather. It's terrifying. Everyone knows the icecaps are melting... this movie was a warning to all people of Earth. Stop polluting, f*ckers!

Jack Hall (Dennis Quaid) is a scientist who does lots of science. He's smart and knows something no one else seems to know. The ocean current is about to change due to global warming and now we're all gonna die.

The climate change is sudden and in a short period of time the Northern Hemisphere is thrust into a new ice age. The real story though is about a father on a journey to save his son. And me likey the Jakey. Jake Gyllenhaal that is. It's over-the-top in many aspects, but still a great flick in my books.

Independence Day (1996)

I have so many favie alien movies, but this gem is definitely in my top 5. The special effects were awesome, and I pretty much love anything that Will Smith does.

If aliens do exist, I don't imagine them to be "I come in peace" individuals. I think when if aliens come to visit us one day, they're takin' over. End of story. I can tell you one thing though... I won't be waving 'Welcome to Earth' signs on top of a building. I'll be hiding out in my bunker, complete with projector, popcorn and all my favie apocalypse films, quietly muttering 'I told you so' under my breath for years.

Zombieland (2009)

I really fell in love with the zombie/comedy genre when I watched Shaun of the Dead (2004) - also a great zombie apocalypse flick! Zombieland was a fun romp through a zombie filled world. Now if I were actually making my way through this world, you'd probably find me holed up with Bill Murray watchin' Groundhog Day (1993) on repeat.

Anyone else out there heart the end of the world too?

Memorable Monologue: Titanic

"I got everything I need right here with me. I got air in my lungs, a few blank sheets of paper. I mean, I love waking up in the morning not knowing what's gonna happen or who I'm gonna meet, where I'm gonna wind up. Just the other night I was sleeping under a bridge and now here I am on the grandest ship in the world having champagne with you fine people. I figure life's a gift and I don't intend on wasting it. You don't know what hand you're gonna get dealt next. You learn to take life as it comes at you... to make each day count."

~ Leonardo DiCaprio as Jack Dawson in Titanic (1997)

Colourful Cameo: Motley Crue in Disaster!

Here we have a special stop-motion-animation cameo appearance by Motley Crue. Yeah. I guess they need gigs BADLY!

Anyway, nobody has heard of the spoof Disaster! (2005) except us, or so I believe. I pulled this one out of a bin for ONE DOLLAR, because I knew it had potential. And it was awesome. The animation is not top-notch, but the humour is raunchy and filthy, with a sex scene that rivals Team America.

So Motley Crue appears throughout this movie in a pointless cameo (vocal cameo I should say, since their stop-motion counterparts are horribly done). With the end of the world coming, the band decides to throw the most bitchin' rock concert ever. Ummm ok.

Check out a clip of their Colourful Cameo that involves toilet humour, booze, and general stupidity.

Tantalizing Trivia: Earthquake

In honour of the earthquake that 'rocked' our hometown of Ottawa yesterday, I've prepared some special Tantalizing Trivia for all you Cin-Obs! For realzzz...

Earthquake (1974) was our very first 'disaster' movie ever! We were quite young and it instilled a fear in us of moving ground that has kept us in therapy for years. Ok. Not really, but it did scare the shit outta us in our formative years. The movie starred Charlton Heston and Ava Gardner and a mofo huge dam that collapses in the quake (best scene of the entire movie!)

So here's the triv - On the first day of shooting there was... you guessed it... AN EARTHQUAKE!! Weird right? Well, it gets weirder. Another earthquake struck on the last day of shooting too! What kind of coincidence is that?! Mother Nature was all: "Ok fuckers. You want an earthquake movie? Deal with this!" *Cue earthquake*

If you're into disaster flicks, check it out!

Resident Evil: Afterlife POSTER!

Milla Jovovich with guns. What more could you expect from the poster for the new Resident Evil film? Well, you COULD put her in the pouring rain, all sexy and soaking wet... oh wait, you did! Awesome.

A little zombie action in the poster wouldn't hurt either. Just sayin', the movie IS more than Milla being an action star. Isn't it? ISN'T IT?

Also, this will be in 3D. Nothing like a zombie head exploding in 3 dimensions. GIDDY UP!

Exceptional Escape: 2012

This has to be one of the best (in a truly awful way) escape scenes EVER! When we first watched the trailer for 2012 (2009) we simultaneously dropped a load in our pants. We were terrified.

Although we love apocalyptic shite, we thought we might need psychiatric help if we watched this movie. We skipped it in theaters, mostly due to our fear of defecating in public, and opted to rent it months later. Instead of caccing, we were cackling! We laughed for 2 hours and 38 minutes.

This scene was the most memorable of the entire movie. Watch John Cusack drive his family to safety by dodging explosions, collapsing highways and falling cars. He drives them through a building that's in the process of collapsing for EFF-SAKES!

Cusack saves the day... again... and again... and again. They escape without so much as a scratch, over and over. The earth's crust is literally falling away behind the vehicle. We immediately started referencing The Langoliers (1995). If you get the reference, let us just say: Welcome to the Cin-Ob fam!

Scintillating Scene: Titanic

The most epic-y epic-est of EPIC scenes of EPIC movies that ever was. Huh?

I dunno, but all I can say is this: Everyone knows this scene. I mean EVERYONE. The Pope knows this scene. Nelson Mandela's seen it. The pygmies in Uganda who have never seen a television KNOW this scene.

I used to fantasize about Leo's arms around me, linking his fingies with mine. My fantasies never ended with massive tragedy and ice cold waters. They did however make it as far as the car scene though... Mom - You didn't read that.

Delightful Dialogue: Zombieland

Tallahassee: I'm not great at farewells, so uh... that'll do, pig.

Columbus: That's the worst goodbye I've ever heard. And you stole it from a movie.

5 Minutes of 2012!

See what all the hype (good and bad) is all about. Check out this crap-inducing scene from what appears to be part of the climax of 2012. Seems to be quite an incredible Exceptional Escape as well!

2012 Reviews!

Well, so far we haven't heard great things about 2012. Chantale and I haven't made it out to theatres yet for it, and after getting some feedback, we're not sure we will. Our two Jonathan's have given their input, and it ain't great!

You're a good Cin-Ob, Jonathan #1. Thanks for staying through the bullshit to be able to report back to us!

Jonathan #2, via text message, tells us:

"Not a movie as much as an MGM studio ride. 2012 is great action, constant crisis after crisis. Family oriented with lots of compassion at moments of chaos = very unrealistic. With millions unable to escape disaster, but let out a whistle and the family dog crosses a tight rope to safety."

The general public is giving the film mixed reviews, but we're swayed by our Cin-Obs. If they say it sucked, then it probably did. Although we tend to enjoy the scary doomsday imagery, regardless of the storyline being crap. Take it for what it is, is what we always say.

Have you seen it and have something to say? We want all perspectives!

Tempting Trailer: The Last Man on Earth

Wow... some of the best trailers ever come from B-movies... no doubt. Check out this 1964 piece of art. Haven't seen this one yet, but if we were ever truly tempted by a trailer, this one totally did the trick. There seems to be zombies AND vampires... doesn't get any better! Plus it seems to be the original I Am Legend...

Delightful Dialogue: Armageddon

Oscar: Ok, Mr. Truman, let's say that we actually do land on this. What's it gonna be like up there?

Truman: 200 degrees in the sunlight, minus 200 in the shade, canyons of razor-sharp rock, unpredictable gravitational conditions, unexpected eruptions, things like that.

Oscar: Okay, so the scariest environment imaginable. Thanks. That's all you gotta say, scariest environment imaginable.

~ Billy Bob Thornton and Owen Wilson in Armageddon (1998)
