The Rum Diary: An Alcohol-Filled Romp in the Caribbean!

We're always on the lookout for upcoming Depp projects. The man is amazing. There aren't too many actors that can go from a junkie to a pirate to a weird non-human with sharps for fingies with complete success each and every time.

The Rum Diary, coming in 2011, sounds like a pretty decent drama. While we love Johnny's ability to play all sorts of wacky characters, we're excited to see him be kinda... normal.

Paul Kemp is a freelance journalist who finds himself at a critical turning point in his life while writing for a run-down newspaper in the Caribbean. Paul is challenged on many levels as he tries to carve out a more secure niche for himself amidst a group of lost souls all bent on self-destruction. IMDB

Depp's character, Paul Kemp, moves to Puerto Rico to write for 'The San Juan Star'. He gets into the drinky drinky of the rum and becomes a 'lil obsessed with a woman called Chenault (Amber Heard). Bonus - Since the movie was actually filmed in Puerto Rico, we're looking forward to some beautiful scenery!

Interesting factoid: This flick is actually based on the autobiographical novel by Hunter S. Thompson. He wrote the book in 1959 but it wasn't published until 1988. The movie has been in the works for a while with talks beginning in 2000. We're finally gonna get to see this true story on the big screen next year!

Here's a little slide show of on-set photos taken during filming in March 2009:

I know first hand rum gets people into some serious trouble. It's funny that Depp would take another movie that could lend itself to so many jokes about the rum always being gone.
