Marty McFly's Fashion Faux-Pas

I’ve been watching a lot of Back to the Future (what can I say, the movie sooths my world-weary soul) and recently realized that all of the time-traveling DeLoreans, fluxing flux capacitors, and plutonium-coveting Libyans had been distracting me from the most intriguing aspect of the film.

Right before Marty McFly goes back to 1955 to make-out with his mother, he’s wearing, like, 45 layers of clothing. OK, so it’s actually four layers but still, it’s baffling.

In this scene, Marty sports a maroon t-shirt, a button-down, a denim jacket, a red vest/life-preserver, and if you count suspenders as clothing, well, he’s wearing a pair of those as well.

Now, I don’t claim to be an expert on Hill Valley’s climate or meteorological patterns, but judging from what everyone else wears throughout the movie, Marty’s outfit is completely weather inappropriate—doubly inappropriate when you consider that Hill Valley is actually sunny Los Angeles.

So why does Marty have on a week’s worth of clothing? Only Robert Zemeckis knows. But one thing that’s pretty clear is that 1985 was an incredibly sweaty time for Michael J. Fox--both Back to the Future and Teen Wolf were released that year.

HA! hysterical...but I will say, in the beginning of the year, the nighttime can get pretty chilly in SoCal. sometimes you even need a heavy coat.

Adorable! Everytime I pass a guy with a life preserver I giggle!

wOO~hOO! 1985! year I graduated.
I don't know why he's wearing them all together but we were all wearing those in some shape, fashion, or form. My vest was a really cool tan corduroy!

He was just used to the climate back home. Probably stepped right off a jet from winnipeg or something.

Marty McFly's fashion sense is totally how I judge a man's worth... the more layers, means the more intriguing...

I mean, well, sometimes... not like all the time.

Great post. Never noticed that before. Guess all those night shoots were really, really cold!
