Where The Wild Things Are

Spike Jonze and classic children's stories. Not a combo we would have thought of... but the wackness of the pairing has us trembling in our Cinema Obsessed booties. We got chills... and they're multiplyin'.

And we really started losin' control when we heard it would be another 'hybrid' film - containing live-action, elaborate costumes, CGI, and animatronics. Holy anticipation, Batman.

The film is based on the 1963 children's classic, and we also really likes it lotsly when our kid-memories get transformed into adult ones.

A young boy, sent to his room without supper, creates an imaginary world full of monsters to pass the time. They crown him their leader and mischievious PG adventures begin, and we're sure some deep life lessons about family are learned along the way. Awwww...

The main character, Max, is a no-name child actor. Well ok, he has a name, but what we mean is nobody knows who he is. Don't argue symantics with us... we're cinema obsessed, alright? So drop it. Good.

Catherine Keener plays Max's cruel, child-neglecting mother who starves her child and locks him away in his room. Just kidding, she's probably a very responsible parent. Mark Ruffalo stars as her boy-toy, and the monsters are voiced by the likes of Catherine O'Hara, Lauren Ambrose, Forest Whitaker, and James Gandolfini.

James got the role by telling the director he would "sleep with the fishes" if he didn't give him the job. Just kidding, he probably auditioned. But we bet the casting people were sweating bullets. Get it? They also payed him in DVD players and cartons of cigarettes.

From G to R, there isn't a rating we don't end up enjoying thoroughly. We also enjoy really effed up concepts, weird creatures, and bizarro cinematography. We think this might be right up our alley.

Where are the wild things? Find out October 16, 2009.
