Apparently this is something everyone realized at the age of ten that I only learned (after Chantale berated me for being a dunce) at the age of 24.
In Labyrinth (1986) Bowie's goblin-king-crotch-bulging character Jareth has a knack for ummm... swingin' around crystal balls and making it look all magic-y. Yeah. That's what it's called.
But in the reality that everyone knew existed except me until fairly recently, it was a guy named Michael Moschen, a professional juggler, working behind D-Bow with his arm inserted into the jacket. Geez. I knew Jareth had magic up his sleeve, but wow! BWAHAHA oh Lord I am hilarious. *crickets* No? Ok I'll just go sit in the corner over there and entertain myself with puns. Nobody appreciates me.
Several more exclusive promotional images from the upcoming Hobbit films have been released to the general public, depicting the movie’s all-star cast costumed up as the 13 dwarves (yes, 13, not 7) who drag unwilling hobbit Bilbo Baggins all the way to the Lonely Mountain.
The British contingent is particularly impressive, with Irish actor James Nesbitt taking on the role of Bofur, Being Human’s Aidan Turner cast as Kili and Robin Hood star Richard Armitage playing Thorin Oakenshield. The latter is the dwarf prince who leads the party on their quest to reclaim his home from the dragon, Smaug, who will be played via motion capture by Sherlock’s Benedict Cumberbatch. Quite an impressive line-up, wouldn’t you say?
Of course, there are also several even bigger names reprising their roles having featured in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. Sir Ian McKellan is back as Gandalf (many cast members claimed they would have boycotted the film had he declined the role), whilst Andy Serkis, Hugo Weaving and Elijah Wood return as Gollum, Elrond and Frodo respectively.
Filling the shoes of Bilbo himself (although actually hobbits don’t wear shoes) is Martin Freeman, who director Peter Jackson feels is perfect for the role. On announcing his casting decision, Jackson said, “He is intelligent, funny, surprising and brave, exactly like Bilbo, and I feel incredibly proud to be able to announce that he is our Hobbit.”
It seems old news now that, in the transition from book to film, the Hobbit has been split into two, but some are still struggling to come to terms with the idea. If The Lord of the Rings succeeded with only one film each, why should Tolkien’s shorter prequel story get two films dedicated to it? However, on speculation, The Hobbit actually lends itself quite effectively to a two film format. Like the final installments of the Harry Potter franchise, it seems likely that the first Hobbit film will be somewhat of a journey movie whilst the second will be more action-packed and feature the story’s conclusive epic battle.
The Hobbit films, An Unexpected Journey and There and Back Again, will be released in cinemas in December 2012 and 2013 respectively. All three of the Lord of the Rings films, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King are available for rental or purchase on Blu-Ray or DVD from LOVEFiLM.
"You think you have won! What is light without dark? What are you without me? I am a part of you all. You can never defeat me. We are brothers eternal!"
~ Tim Curry as The Lord of Darkness in Legend (1985)
Immortals comes out November 11, and stars little known but really really exceptionally good looking Henry Cavill (Stardust, 2007) as Theseus, a Greek warrior battling imprisoned titans. Not sure what that means, but all I can imagine (shows how mature I am) is Hercules (1997).
*sings* "Locked those suckas in a vault - they're trapped!"
Anyways, based entirely on the trailer for Immortals, I can say it's obviously from the same peeps as 300, being very stylized. This might be coming out too soon after Clash of the Titans, but I guess Greek mythology is really hot right now.
Mickey Rourke also stars in this flick as King Hyperion, and he is possibly the only thing really out of place in the trailer, since he's not even trying to put on an accent. It's just a whole bunch of British sounding Greeks (whatevs) then all of a sudden Marv from Sin City's voice. Wuh? Oh well, he's sexy, he can stay.
Are you into these mythological movies? Are there too many lately?
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 is already in full promotional swing. The trailer is out!
In case you didn't read the books and don't know what to expect:
The final chapter begins as Harry, Ron, and Hermione continue their quest of finding and destroying the Dark Lord's three remaining Horcruxes, the magical items responsible for his immortality. But as the mystical Deathly Hallows are uncovered, and Voldemort finds out about their mission, the biggest battle begins and life as they know it will never be the same again.[IMDB]
Are you a hard-core HP fan? We're fans, but not crazily so, and we haven't read all the books so we can't quite compare. I just find it funny that each film was promoted as the epic of epicness that was ever epic. And honestly, they all kinda seemed the same at the end - wand duels, fantastical creatures, is Snape good or bad? We get it.
I was much more into the first few when they were young and Harry was just being introduced to the world of wizardry. Have the movies lived up to your expectations? Do you think there were too many?
Oh my oh my oh my... Breaking Dawn is almost here!
Although the last book, in my opinion, was rushed, ridiculous, lazy, and downright disgusting and offensive to young girls, I'm super duper anxious to see how it translates into film. Without any spoilers for those who haven't read the book, I'll just say there were a few gruesome and graphic scenes that I can't quite imagine being played out visually. The movies have been pretty light and PG, but Breaking Dawn (if true to the book) will push the teen-friendly franchise into some racy and nasty territory, including teen marriage and pregnancy, violent sex, and mutant babies. Awwwww yyeaaaahh!!
Anyways, why am I avoiding spoilers? This teaser trailer pretty much tells you everything you need to know. Actually, thinking about it, I bet they'll cut off part 1 right at the gruesome shit and save it for part 2. Yep, that's what they'll do.
The Quileute and the Volturi close in on expecting parents Edward and Bella, whose unborn child poses different threats to the wolf pack and vampire coven.
Chanty told you about this one a while ago, well here's a snapshot Eddie Marsan and my husband Ewan McGregor on set!
Now, my hubby-slash-complete stranger isn't playing the titular Jack, but rather a member of the King's guard.
Swoooon.... my knight in shining armor!
A modern day fairy tale in which the long-standing peace between men and giants is threatened, as a young farmer leads an expedition into the giants' kingdom in hopes of rescuing a kidnapped princess.[IMDB]
I'm SO into this one, as it incorporates all the things I love... Ewan, fairy tales, giants, ughhh... ok so SOME of the things I love. But McGregs makes it all worthwhile.
Ok, in case you didn't know, I have a sick sick sick crush on Ewan. We're meant to be together. I don't care what anyone thinks.
OOOOhhhhh Angie - McGregs is comin' out with what sounds like a goodie!! Because he's your boyfriend, I thought I'd share this upcoming with you and the rest of the Cin-Obs!

Ewan McGregor, Bill Nighy and Stanley Tucci are all set to star. AMAZING! Not only a great cast, but a fantastic premise. Who doesn't love a fairly tale?!
Makes me think of that old Mickey Mouse cartoon.. ya know the one.. the Jack and the Beanstalk one where Mickey and his fam have to thinly slice the beans for their din-dins. Then he goes up the beanstalk and bounces off some Jello then gets chased by the giant. That shit was awesome. If this comes close to that cartoon, I'll be happy.
I am also realizing how much I love super gigantic, oversized things AND miniaturized things. What is that? There's no happy medium for me. Either XL or teeny weeny. There.. I've just set you all up for TONS of comments...
Are we all happy about Jack the Giant Killer? Yes? Excellent.
"I try to believe in as many as six impossible things before breakfast. Count them, Alice. One, there are drinks that make you shrink. Two, there are foods that make you grow. Three, animals can talk. Four, cats can disappear. Five, there is a place called Underland. Six, I can slay the Jabberwocky."

"Today we acknowledge a really terrible loss. Cedric Diggory was, as you all know, exceptionally hard working, infinitely fair-minded, and most importantly, a fierce, fierce friend. Therefore, I feel you have the right to know exactly how he died. You see, Cedric Diggory was murdered, by Lord Voldemort. The Ministry of Magic does not wish me to tell you this. But not to do so I feel would be an insult to his memory. Now the pain we all feel at this dreadful loss reminds me, and, reminds us, that though we may come from different countries and speak in different tongues, our hearts beat as one. In light of the recent events, the bonds of friendship made this year will be more important than ever. Remember that, and Cedric Diggory will not have died in vain. You remember that, and we'll celebrate a boy who was kind, and honest, and brave, and true. Right to the very end."
~ Michael Gambon as Albus Dumbledore in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)
"The space goes down, down baby, down, down the roller coaster. Sweet, sweet baby, sweet, sweet, don't let me go. Shimmy, shimmy, cocoa pop. Shimmy, shimmy, rock. Shimmy, shimmy, cocoa pop. Shimmy, shimmy, rock. I met a girlfriend - a triscuit. She said, a triscuit - a biscuit. Ice cream, soda pop, vanilla on the top. Ooh, Shelly's out, walking down the street, ten times a week. I read it. I said it. I stole my momma's credit. I'm cool. I'm hot. Sock me in the stomach three more times."
"I've just decided to switch our Friday schedule to Monday, which means that the test we take each Friday on what we learned during the week will now take place on Monday before we've learned it. But since today is Tuesday, it doesn't matter in the slightest. Pencils ready!"
~ David Battley as Mr. Turkentine in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971)
"I have been in this business a long time. Now, if I don't want to do a show, it's not because I got stage fright. It's because some creature from beyond doesn't want me to do the show."
~ Gerrit Graham as Beef in Phantom of the Paradise (1974)
"Ah, Mr. Talbot. We are here tonight to illustrate conclusively that Mr. Talbot's fears are quite irrational. So, we will remain in this room together, and once Mr. Talbot has witnessed that the full moon holds no sway over him, that he remains a perfectly ordinary human being, he will have taken his first small step down the long road to mental recovery. We are all aware that Mr. Talbot has suffered quite traumatic personal experiences. He witnessed his mother's self mutilations. His young mind, unable to accept it, created a fantastical truth, that his father is to blame. That is father is literally a monster. But, your father is not a werewolf. You were not bitten by a werewolf. You will not become a werewolf, any more than I will sprout wings and fly out of that window."
~ Antony Sher as Dr. Hoenneger in The Wolfman (2010)
"This is my most special place in all the world, Ray. Once a place touches you like this, the wind nevers blows so cold again. You feel for it, like it was your child."
~ Burt Lancaster as Dr. Archibald 'Moonlight' Graham in Field of Dreams (1989)
"Fiona, I know everything about you. I know you sing so beautifully that birds explode. I know that when you sign your name, you put a heart over the i. I know that when you see a shooting star you cross your fingers on both hands, squinch up your nose, and you make a wish, I know that you don't like the covers wrapped around your feet, and I know that you sleep by candlelight because every time you close your eyes, you're afraid you're going to wake up back in that tower, But most importantly Fiona, I know that the reason that you turn human every day is because you've never been kissed, well, by me."
~ Mike Myers as Shrek in Shrek Forever After (2010)
Ohhh Hollywood. Here we go again with the remakes. While I bitch and moan, I can't help but be slightly intrigued. If this live-action take on the classic fairy tale is in the same vein as The Brothers Grimm (2005), then I'll be hap-hap-happy!
Rumoured to play Snow White is our personal favie Kristen Stewart. Ms. Misery herself. I'm waiting for the backlash.. let me have it Cin-Obs - I know there are a few of you who very much disagree with our opinion of the one dimensional miserable actress.
Snow White and the Huntsman is an upcoming 2012 American fantasy adventure film directed by Rupert Sanders, written by Evan Daugherty, that is currently in pre-production. A huntsman is ordered to take Snow White into the woods and kill her but instead he chooses to let her go and the two are evidently chained together for part of the movie as they make their escape.Wikipedia
I am mighty excitey to see Charlize as the big baddie. She played one hell of a baddie in Monster (2003).. something tells me she'll be a little purtier in this one as the Evil Queen.
Looking forward to it. I do love me a fantasy flick!
When I first read the IMDB synopsis, I wasn't sure what to make of it.. here:
A childless couple bury a box in their backyard, containing all of their wishes for an infant. Soon, a child is born, though Timothy Green is not all that he appears.
So here I am thinkin' 'What the hell is up with Timothy?'... 'Does he have 2 heads?', 'Will he require an exorcism at birth?', 'Is Timothy an alien?'... Nope, apparently Timothy is musically inclined... here:
The Odd Life of Timothy Green is an upcoming movie from director Peter Hedges (man responsible for Dan in Real Life), project that is already being described as “modern-day fable” that will center on a child-prodigy musician and his parents. FilmoFilia
Not as exciting, but equally intriguing. Set to star are Jennifer Garner, Ron Livingston, Dianne Wiest and newcomer Cameron Adams (Dan in Real Life) as Timothy Green.
