The Smurfs Movie Nears!

Once upon a time we told you about this upcoming film, and it was all pretty vague at the time. Well details have arrived!

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a cast!

Some notable voice talents include:

Jonathan Winters as the voice of Papa Smurf
Katy Perry as the voice of Smurfette
Alan Cumming as the voice of Gutsy Smurf
George Lopez as the voice of Grouchy Smurf
Fred Armisen as the voice of Brainy Smurf
Hank Azaria as Gargamel
Paul Reubens as the voice of Jokey Smurf
Kenan Thompson as the voice of Greedy Smurf
B.J. Novak as the voice of Baker Smurf
Jeff Foxworthy as the voice of Handy Smurf
Wolfgang Puck as the voice of Chef Smurf

Yowza! Now check out Hank Azaria on set as the villain, Gargamel!

The Smurfs themselves will be CGI... but guueeess whaaattt??? This movie will feature the lovable blue dudes being magically transported into Manhatten! YESS!! We love when fantasy creatures are plopped into the real world. I can't wait to see people's reactions to these little guys as they get into all kinds of shenanigans, trying to find their way back to their village.

Coming July 2011!

Azaria looks great. Some inspired casting choices, too. Armisen sounds great already as Brainy, and Reubens as Jokey is spot on. I'd rather look at Katy Perry than just listen, but oh well.

But Jonathan Winters? No. AND MOVING THEM TO MANHATTAN?!?! Hate hate hate. They live in medieval times, for chrissakes! I loved the Smurfs as a kid and might've been on board, but the need to modernize it kills it for me. Yay - another fish out of water movie. :|

I am afraid I have to echo Flecth's thoughts here on the Manhattan thing! Why Hollywood, but why always New York??? Be creative! I have to say, as long as they can make it work like "Enchanted" I might go for it, but CGI? meh not too sure about the whole thing...remains to be seen...

Hank Azaria looks awesome. Very underrated talent! This "retelling" though... eh!

I heard that Tim Gunn was going to be in it too. Is that correct?

Yeah! He'll be a live action character. The executive of a cosmetics company :)

I have high hopes for this movie.... Can it be good? Sadly, I'm not sure if it will live up to it's potential.... I think that the Smurfs might be one of those nostalgic juggernauts that shouldn't travel too far outside of the wheelhouse....
