The Vow: A Movie Surprisingly Not Based on a Nicholas Sparks Novel

Wanna cry? Do ya? Do ya? Well stock up on the Kleenex Cin-Obs, cause somethin' tells me this upcoming dromance (yes, I put them together) is gonna make us weepy and snotty.

The Vow is an upcoming romantic drama film directed by Michael Sucsy, starring Rachel McAdams, Channing Tatum, Jeffrey Donovan, Lucas Grabeel, Sam Neill, Scott Speedman and Jessica Lange.

The film is based on a true story about a young woman who loses all recent memory in a car accident and struggles to rebuild her identity. It's based on the book of the same title, which is the story of Kim and Krickitt Carpenter. It is Bernd Eichinger's final film right before his death. Wikipedia

When I first read about The Vow, I immediately assumed it was one of Sparks' sappy creations. But then I realized that if he had written a book with this plot, Rachel's character would have died in the accident, then her husband might die and then the story would be about their families picking up the pieces... then dying.

The Conspirator

Period film! Period film! Hoooorah!

Coming in April is The Conspirator which tells the story of the only woman charged with conspiring to kill Abe Lincoln. Robin Wright (minus the Penn) stars as Mary Surratt, the woman on trial, but the film also stars some awesome folks such as James McAvoy, Justin Long, Evan Rachel Wood, Kevin Kline, and others I'm too lazy to type out.

I love me a period film, as you all well know, but a true story makes it even more exciting. And this is one of the most famous stories in North American history, so I can't wait to see the re-enactment of how it went down. And when I say re-enactment I don't mean the shitty made for tv, Crime Stoppers kind, I mean the serious kind with talented actors.

What do you think? Does this one tickle your fancy?

We Have Big Hopes For 'Big Eyes'

Ooooh another period piece? I'm a lucky gal!! Let's go back, way back, back into time. Ok, not that far back, but still - a time of pill box hats and suspenders? Sounds good to me!

A drama centered on the awakening of the painter Margaret Keane, her phenomenal success in the 1950s, and the subsequent legal difficulties she had with her husband, who claimed credit for her works in the 1960s. IMDB

Biopics are awesome in our books. We didn't know anything about Ms. Keane until we read about this flick, but we are officially intrigued. We also looove the casting of Kate Hudson to play Margaret. K-Hud can do no wrong. And super bonus, we get to see Thomas Haden Church as Walter Keane.

This may not be a flashy, action-packed film, but we are sure it will satisfy the mellow, drama-lovers in us. What do the Cin-Obs think? Does everyone enjoy a good biopic from time to time?

What's your favie biopic to date?

The Iceman: A Chilling Tale of Murder.. (hehe I'm clever)

I remember watching a documentary in high school about this ice-cold killer. Now I get to see this killer on the big screen! Yipppeeee!

The Iceman is an upcoming film based on the life of notorious hitman Richard Kuklinski. The film is being directed by Ariel Vroman and stars Michael Shannon as Kuklinski, Benicio Del Toro as mob capo Roy DeMeo and James Franco as fellow hitman Robert "Mr. Softee" Pronge. Vromen, also wrote the screenplay based on the book The Iceman: The True Story of a Cold-Blooded Killer by Anthony Bruno with Morgan Land, will direct. Wikipedia

It's a great cast, and as always, we always enjoy films that are based on fact. The real Richard Kuklinski will give you the heebie-jeebies - we're hoping Michael Shannon can induce the same creepy vibe. We have faith Mikey, we have faith.

No promo shiz yet, but rest assured, we'll keep you posted!

Delightful Dialogue: Kinsey

Alfred Kinsey: Who can tell me which part of the human body can enlarge a hundred times. You, miss?

Female Student: I'm sure I don't know. And you've no right to ask me such a question in a mixed class.

Alfred Kinsey: I was referring to the pupil in your eye, young lady. And I think I should tell you, you're in for a terrible disappointment.

Memorable Monologue: The Social Network

"You are probably going to be a very successful computer person. But you're going to go through life thinking that girls don't like you because you're a nerd. And I want you to know, from the bottom of my heart, that that won't be true. It'll be because you're an asshole."

Ewan McGregor's (aka my husband's) New Disaster Flick:The Impossible

So during my bi-monthly stalk-a-thon of Ewan McGregor, I noticed that my favie romantic leading man is taking on a new type of flick. THE DISTASTER GENRE! Ooooh! You all know how we love the end of the world, so this oughta be good. Ok it's not exactly the end of the world, but it's the first theatrical big budget adaptation of the 2004 tsunami.

An account of a family caught, with tens of thousands of strangers, in the mayhem of one of the worst natural catastrophes of our time. [IMDB]

It also stars Naomi Watts, I'm assuming as the wifey. Great, now I have to hate her too. I'm getting exhausted with my jealous hatred of Ewan's leading ladies. Anyways, The Impossible comes out in 2011, and although I get to stare at my fantasy-hubby, probably all wet and sexy and dirty and hero-ish, I might have a hard time with it since I have monthly nightmares about tsunamis and tidal waves. Weird, I know. But what's weirder is that I always survive in my dream, by plugging my nose. It's as easy as that.

How do you feel about this story being made into (another) film? Will you see it? Is it too soon for this movie? Like when it was waaayy too soon for United 93 or World Trade Centre? Is it in bad taste?

Ewan, will you marry me?

Memorable Monologue: Pearl Harbour

"Yesterday, December 7, 1941 - a date which will live in infamy. The United States Of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by Naval and Air Forces of the Empire of Japan. It is obvious that planning the attack began many weeks ago, during the intervening time the Japanese Government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace. The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian Islands has caused severe damage to American military forces, I regret to tell you that over three thousand American lives have been lost. No matter how long it may take us to over come this pre-meditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory. Because of this unprovoked, dastardly attack by Japan, I ask that the congress declare a state of War."

~ Jon Voight as President Franklin D. Roosevelt in Pearl Harbour (2001)

Halle wants an Oscar for Frankie and Alice (well that's my guess anyway)

Halle Berry plays a woman with multiple personalities, one of which is racist, in Frankie and Alice. Ohhh I smell an Oscar plea! Black (sorta) woman with a deep-South racist alter ego?

Oh and did I mention based on a true story? Booyeah, prepare your speech, Halle.

I must say this trailer inspired me to start writing my dramatic scripts.

My ideas are:

1) A scientist who studies spiders but is arachnophobic
2) A pilot with a fear of heights
3) A neo-Nazi who learns he is Jewish (this one will win best picture I think)

Exquisite Extra: The Social Network

I can't even tell you how much I enjoyed this recent flick! Jesse Eisenberg was absolutely brilliant (but then again, he's always brilliant in my eyes) and the story, however factual, was fan-freakin'-tastic!

This Equisite Extra is a mish-mash of clips of the filming of the movie. There's no commentary, interviews or set-ups, but if you're into the 'movie magic' like we are, you'll appreciate the different perspective. Granted, watching snippets like this sometimes takes away from the magic of it all, but in this case it's good fun. Enjoy!

Tasty Tagline: The September Issue

Fashion is a religion. This is the bible.

My Week With Marilyn

Ooooh I love hearing about new biopics! And the life and times of Marilyn Monroe is something I'll definitely tune in to! I just hope Michelle Williams does me proud in her portrayal of this legend.

Colin Clark, an employee of Sir Laurence Olivier's, documents the tense interaction between Olivier and Marilyn Monroe during production of The Prince and the Showgirl. [IMDB]

The film also stars Emma "not Hermione" Watson, and Dominic "Mamma Mia" Cooper, as well as other huge names like Judi Dench, Kenneth Branagh (as Sir Lawrence Olivier), Julia Ormond, and one of Chantale' favie Princes, Dougray Scott.

With a cast like this, how could they go wrong? It's also shapin' up to be an awesome 50s period film with brilliant costumes, so I'm razzajazzed for sure. Too bad I'll have to wait until 2011 when it comes out.

Methinks this also might be a new trend. At least I'd like it to be. Where are the biopics of Audrey Hepburn? Bette Davis? Katharine Hepburn? Ok I know Katharine made a small appearance in The Aviator (2004), but Blachett's portrayal was so awesome I think she should get her own movie.

I'm off track. What do you think about this Monroe movie? Is the classic blonde bombshell untouchable as a character? Can anyone do her justice? Happy Birthday Mr. President? Fuzzy end of the lollipop? Sorry I got carried away.

We Bought a Zoo... And I'll Be Buying a Ticket to See It!

I'm a huge fan of Scarlett Johansson so I'm always keepin' an eye out for any upcoming projects on the 'ol IMDB page. I've just stumbled upon a goodie. It's got great actors, it's a great story AND it's all true! Oooooh, me is mighty excitey!

We Bought a Zoo is an upcoming comedy-drama film directed by Cameron Crowe, starring Matt Damon and Thomas Haden Church.

The film is based on a memoir by Benjamin Mee, tells the true account of how the author and his family used their life savings to buy a dilapidated zoo, replete with 200 exotic animals facing destruction, in the English countryside. Wikipedia

Tempting Trailer: Temple Grandin

I had the absolute pleasure of meeting the one and only Temple Grandin last week. She was in Toronto for the Geneva conference on Autism and I got to hear her speak. She is amazing.

When I heard she was signing books between sessions, I pushed through the crowds eagerly. But I didn't bring one of her many amazing books for her to sign. Noooo. I grabbed my copy of Temple Grandin (2010) and had her sign the cover. Oh happy day!

If you don't know Temple Grandin, she is a top scientists in the humane livestock handling industry. She is brilliant and HBO tells her incredible story with a biopic.

We Get It, James Cameron. You LOOOOVE to film underwater... Here's "Sanctum"

An underwater cave diving team experiences a life-threatening crisis during an expedition to the unexplored and least accessible cave system in the world. [IMDB]

Ughhh... he just looooves to use his little submarines and underwater camera equipment.

So J-Cam is bringing us Sanctum. I'm actually surprised that this is his follow up to Avatar, mostly because Avatar was quite original (haters quit hatin') and this spelunking concept has been done to death. The Cave (2005), The Descent (2005) plus the sequel, not to mention Cameron's own The Abyss (1989) which also involved tons of underwater shots and claustrophobimoments.

I almost stopped watching the trailer when the chick sarcastically said "What could possibly go wrong diving in caves?" Oh HA HA, it makes it SO original by acknowledging that everyone knows the shit's gonna hit the submarine propellor.

The visuals will be beautiful, I'm sure, the 3D will probz be cool, and it stars a bunch of people I don't recognize, which I usually like since I'm not distracted by star status. Although I did spot my Welsh-crush Ioan Gruffudd (aka Mr. Fantastic) in the trailer.
