A Great Bromance Returns With The New Sherlock Holmes Flick!

Yaaayyy! I am so freaking excited for Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, you don't even know!

I've watched the first one so many times, it's sick. I love the period genre, I love RDJ, I love Jude, I love detectives, I love science, I love pipes, I love paranormal, so how could I NOT love that movie? So the idea of a sequel has me tingling.

Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick Dr. Watson join forces to outwit and bring down their fiercest adversary, Professor Moriarty. IMDB

No surprise in the plot there, since it was majorly hinted at in the first one, and anyone who knows a darn tootin' thing about Holmes is that Moriarty is his arch nemesis, so a tiny cameo in passing in the first movie just wasn't enough.

Honestly, I really can't wait to see more of RDJ and Jude, because they just had this bro-chemistry that was mesmorizing.

Did you enjoy the first one? Are you psyched for the second one?

The Producers of 300 Bring us More Buff Guys in Tight Fitting Ancient Greek Armor

... not that I'm complaining.

Immortals comes out November 11, and stars little known but really really exceptionally good looking Henry Cavill (Stardust, 2007) as Theseus, a Greek warrior battling imprisoned titans. Not sure what that means, but all I can imagine (shows how mature I am) is Hercules (1997).

*sings* "Locked those suckas in a vault - they're trapped!"

Anyways, based entirely on the trailer for Immortals, I can say it's obviously from the same peeps as 300, being very stylized. This might be coming out too soon after Clash of the Titans, but I guess Greek mythology is really hot right now.

Mickey Rourke also stars in this flick as King Hyperion, and he is possibly the only thing really out of place in the trailer, since he's not even trying to put on an accent. It's just a whole bunch of British sounding Greeks (whatevs) then all of a sudden Marv from Sin City's voice. Wuh? Oh well, he's sexy, he can stay.

Are you into these mythological movies? Are there too many lately?

Ewan McGregor in Jack the Giant Killer!

Chanty told you about this one a while ago, well here's a snapshot Eddie Marsan and my husband Ewan McGregor on set!

Now, my hubby-slash-complete stranger isn't playing the titular Jack, but rather a member of the King's guard.

Swoooon.... my knight in shining armor!

A modern day fairy tale in which the long-standing peace between men and giants is threatened, as a young farmer leads an expedition into the giants' kingdom in hopes of rescuing a kidnapped princess. [IMDB]

I'm SO into this one, as it incorporates all the things I love... Ewan, fairy tales, giants, ughhh... ok so SOME of the things I love. But McGregs makes it all worthwhile.

Ok, in case you didn't know, I have a sick sick sick crush on Ewan. We're meant to be together. I don't care what anyone thinks.

Delightful Dialogue: The Flintstones

Wilma: I cannot believe you just sat there and let them walk out on us.

Fred: At least I can walk around the house in my underwear again.

Wilma: And that is more important to you than 30 years of friendship?

Fred: It is on a hot day.

Arabian Nights... It's About to Get Historical Up in Here!!

Get ready for an epic movie of legendary proportions... I have no idea what I'm saying. But seriously, read this then tell me you're not interested/excited:

This is a 3D film adaption of the historical text One Thousand and One Nights, which is alternately known in the West as Arabian Nights. The text is a compilation of stories from the Middle East that date back to the period between the 8th and 13th century AD. The first English translation of the text appeared in 1706.

The 2011 film adaptation will be directed by Chuck Russell whose previous credits include being director of The Scorpion King and executive producer of Collateral. Mahalo

Sweeeet. Starring Anthony Hopkins as Pharotu, Dwayne 'formerly known as The Rock' Johnson as Sinbad and Liam Hemsworth as Ali Baba, how could this be bad?

There is something about this combo of actors and the story that make me all tingly inside. I got especially giddy when I read this:

The 2011 film version will feature prominent characters from the original text such as Sinbad, Aladdin, and Scheherazade. An interview on the MTV Movies Blog with lead actor Liam Hemsworth indicates that rather than focusing on the overall frame story of Arabian Nights where Queen Scheherazade must tell a Persian king 1001 tales in order to keep from being killed, this film version will center on one of the specific tales told by Scheherazade.  MTV

Oh HELL YES. We're in.

Memorable Monologue: The Road to Wellville

"My brother, W.K. Kellogg, worked for me as a low-paid assistant for many years. Now he's off on his own and amassin' fortunes with my corn flake invention. Unfortunately, he has chosen the family name to promote it. But the whole world knows only one Kellogg: me, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg! Surgeon, inventor, author, and crusader for biological livin'! I do not seek monetary rewards, for I am called to a greater glory. Here at the Battle Creek Sanitarium, the spirits soar, the mind is educated, and the bowels - -the bowels are born again!"

~ Anthony Hopkins as Dr. John Harvey Kellogg in The Road to Wellville (1994)

The Conspirator

Period film! Period film! Hoooorah!

Coming in April is The Conspirator which tells the story of the only woman charged with conspiring to kill Abe Lincoln. Robin Wright (minus the Penn) stars as Mary Surratt, the woman on trial, but the film also stars some awesome folks such as James McAvoy, Justin Long, Evan Rachel Wood, Kevin Kline, and others I'm too lazy to type out.

I love me a period film, as you all well know, but a true story makes it even more exciting. And this is one of the most famous stories in North American history, so I can't wait to see the re-enactment of how it went down. And when I say re-enactment I don't mean the shitty made for tv, Crime Stoppers kind, I mean the serious kind with talented actors.

What do you think? Does this one tickle your fancy?

We Have Big Hopes For 'Big Eyes'

Ooooh another period piece? I'm a lucky gal!! Let's go back, way back, back into time. Ok, not that far back, but still - a time of pill box hats and suspenders? Sounds good to me!

A drama centered on the awakening of the painter Margaret Keane, her phenomenal success in the 1950s, and the subsequent legal difficulties she had with her husband, who claimed credit for her works in the 1960s. IMDB

Biopics are awesome in our books. We didn't know anything about Ms. Keane until we read about this flick, but we are officially intrigued. We also looove the casting of Kate Hudson to play Margaret. K-Hud can do no wrong. And super bonus, we get to see Thomas Haden Church as Walter Keane.

This may not be a flashy, action-packed film, but we are sure it will satisfy the mellow, drama-lovers in us. What do the Cin-Obs think? Does everyone enjoy a good biopic from time to time?

What's your favie biopic to date?

Delightful Dialogue: Kinsey

Alfred Kinsey: Who can tell me which part of the human body can enlarge a hundred times. You, miss?

Female Student: I'm sure I don't know. And you've no right to ask me such a question in a mixed class.

Alfred Kinsey: I was referring to the pupil in your eye, young lady. And I think I should tell you, you're in for a terrible disappointment.

~ Liam Neeson as Dr. Alfred Kinsey in Kinsey (2004)

The Help.. Get Ready for Some Period Piece Palooza!

Who loves a period film? We do! We do! Huzzah for frilly skirts and bad hygiene!

Check out our podcast page to hear a full episode of period piece ranting and raving.. ok back on track. I was checkin' out Ms. Emma 's resume the other day and found this gem that caught my eye. Another book to movie, The Help tells the story of three women and their experiences with racial struggles.

The Help is an upcoming film adaptation of Kathryn Stockett's 2009 novel of the same name. The film is Tate Taylor's directorial debut, and will star Emma Stone, Mike Vogel, Bryce Dallas Howard, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, and Allison Janney.

Aibileen Clark (Viola Davis) is a middle-aged African-American maid who has spent her life raising white children and has recently lost her only son; Minny Jackson (Octavia Spencer) is an African-American maid who has often offended her employers despite her family's struggles with money and her desperate need for jobs; and Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan (Emma Stone) is a young white woman who has recently moved back home after graduating from college to find out her childhood maid has mysteriously disappeared. These three stories intertwine to explain how life in Jackson, Mississippi revolves around "the help"; yet they are always kept at a certain distance because of racial lines. Wikipedia

Holy synopsis batman! Sounds good though right? Me likey. Me going to watchey. Cin-Obs unite! Are we all in folks?

Posters and trailers to come!

Memorable Monologue: Inglourious Basterds

My name is Lt. Aldo Raine and I'm putting together a special team, and I need me eight soldiers. Eight Jewish-American soldiers. Now, y'all might've heard rumors about the armada happening soon. Well, we'll be leaving a little earlier. We're gonna be dropped into France, dressed as civilians. And once we're in enemy territory, as a bushwhackin' guerrilla army, we're gonna be doin' one thing and one thing only... killin' Nazis.

Now, I don't know about y'all, but I sure as hell didn't come down from the goddamn Smoky Mountains, cross five thousand miles of water, fight my way through half of Sicily and jump out of a f*ckin' air-o-plane to teach the Nazis lessons in humanity. Nazi ain't got no humanity. They're the foot soldiers of a Jew-hatin', mass murderin' maniac and they need to be dee-stroyed. That's why any and every every son of a bitch we find wearin' a Nazi uniform, they're gonna die.

Now, I'm the direct descendant of the mountain man Jim Bridger. That means I got a little Injun in me. And our battle plan will be that of an Apache resistance. We will be cruel to the Germans, and through our cruelty they will know who we are. And they will find the evidence of our cruelty in the disemboweled, dismembered, and disfigured bodies of their brothers we leave behind us. And the German won't not be able to help themselves but to imagine the cruelty their brothers endured at our hands, and our boot heels, and the edge of our knives. And the German will be sickened by us, and the German will talk about us, and the German will fear us. And when the German closes their eyes at night and they're tortured by their subconscious for the evil they have done, it will be with thoughts of us they are tortured with. Sound good?

The Basterds: YES, SIR!

That's what I like to hear. But I got a word of warning for all you would-be warriors. When you join my command, you take on debt. A debt you owe me personally. Each and every man under my command owes me one hundred Nazi scalps. And I want my scalps. And all y'all will git me one hundred Nazi scalps, taken from the heads of one hundred dead Nazis. Or you will die tryin'.

Memorable Monologue: Sherlock Holmes

"As to where I am, I was, admittedly, lost for a moment, between Charing Cross and Holborn, but I was saved by the bread shop on Saffron Hill. The only baker to use a certain French glaze on their loaves - a Brittany sage. After that, the carriage forked left, then right, and then the tell-tale bump at the Fleet Conduit. And as to who you are, that took every ounce of my not-inconsiderable experience. The letters on your desk were addressed to a Sir Thomas Rotherham. Lord Chief Justice, that would be the official title. Who you really are is, of course, another matter entirely. Judging by the sacred ox on your ring, you're the secret head of the Temple of the Four Orders in whose headquarters we now sit, located on the northwest corner of St. James Square, I think. As to the mystery, the only mystery is why you bothered to blindfold me at all."

~ Robert Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes in Sherlock Holmes (2009)

Memorable Monologue: Gangs of New York

"I'm forty-seven. Forty-seven years old. You know how I stayed alive this long? All these years? Fear. The spectacle of fearsome acts. Somebody steals from me, I cut off his hands. He offends me, I cut out his tongue. He rises against me, I cut off his head, stick it on a pike, raise it high up so all on the streets can see. That's what preserves the order of things. Fear."

~ Daniel Day-Lewis as Bill the Butcher in Gangs of New York (2002)

Memorable Monologue: The Princess Bride

"Well, Roberts had grown so rich, he wanted to retire. He took me to his cabin and he told me his secret. 'I am not the Dread Pirate Roberts', he said. 'My name is Ryan; I inherited the ship from the previous Dread Pirate Roberts, just as you will inherit it from me. The man I inherited it from is not the real Dread Pirate Roberts either. His name was Cummerbund. The real Roberts has been retired fifteen years and living like a king in Patagonia."

~ Cary Elwes as Wesley in The Princess Bride (1987)
