Striking Similarity: Tim Allen, Spaceman

In Toy Story (1995), Tim Allen voices Buzz Lightyear, a Space Ranger. During the film, he hitches a ride with a pizza delivery truck, notably a Toyota.

In Galaxy Quest (1999) Tim Allen plays Jason Nesmith, an actor who once portrayed a spaceship captain. While planning a gig to visit fans, Nesmith demands a limousine, saying "The last time I did one of these gigs, they shoved me in the back of a Toyota."

Coincidence? I think not. Ok, maybe I'm sick, but you can't help but watch Galaxy Quest and think this might be a reference to his role as Buzz. No? Not so obvious? Whatever, I'm a winner and I know it.

Striking Similarity: Famous Last Words

In a weird and random Striking Similarity, I'd like to introduce you to two baddies who had exactly precisely identical last words. Both of which turned out to be fairly true, as their respective stories go.

Exhibit A: The Mummy (1999)

Imhotep, the high priest, is cursed and buried alive in ancient Egypt. We find out later in the film that his last thoughts/words were carved into the inside of his sarcophogous.

"DEATH IS ONLY THE BEGINNING"

This turns out to be true when Imhotep is resurrected to wreak havoc on our heros.

Jump to 2:20 to see the discovery of his poetic las moments.

Exhibit B: Sherlock Holmes (2009)

The evil Lord Blackwood has a similar thought process before he is hanged. Wait, not similar... identical. Which also comes to fruition when Blackwood continues to murder people after he is hanged and it turns out... well, just watch the movie.

2:55 mark for his deep thoughts.

Striking Similarity: Cabin Bats

Here's another moment that will make you go "these chicks have too much time on their hands."

In The Great Outdoors (1988) the family panics when they realize there's a bat in their cabin. Everyone frantically runs out, and the men are expected to go back in and take care of things. Dan Aykroyd and John Candy dress up, wave objects around, and basically... shenanigans ensue.

In Black Sheep (1996), perhaps in homage to the aforementioned cabin-bat scene, they encouter a bat of their own. Chris Farley and Davivd Spade are absolutely hilarious with their contraptions and little-girlish fear of the flying rodent. Observe.

Striking Similarity: Tale of the Two Snackers

Tony Shaloub's character Fred Kwan is seen snacking in many of his scenes in Galaxy Quest (1999).

Another big snacker was Rusty Ryan, Brad Pitt's character in Ocean's Eleven (2001). Rusty is also seen snacking on something in almost every scene he appeared in. In the scene Tess (Julia Roberts) is coming down the stairwell, Rusty is snacking on shrimp. The scene had so many takes, Pitt ate over 40 shrimp! Sick...

A lesser known bit of triv is that while I watched these two movies and was in the process of drawing this Striking Similarity, I was also snacking. What a coincidence.

Striking Similarity: Catatonic Woman Deja Vu

Wow. If you didn't think we were sick with THIS Striking Similarity, you will now...

Let us introduce you to Alice Drummond. You may not recognize the name, but you do know her. We promise. She played Lucy in Awakenings (1990) and Clara in To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar (1995). She basically always plays an old lady.

We're comparing these two glorious roles today. In both flicks, Alice played a woman coming out of a non-verbal, catatonic state. What is that about?!

Exhibit A:

Alice as Clara in To Wong Foo:

Exhibit B:

Alice as Lucy in Awakenings (1990)

How weird is that? And in both movies, she snaps out of it and becomes the cutest little granny you ever did see. Another important note - both characters are obsessed with the past, Clara being stuck on movies of the 20s, and Lucy being mentally stuck in 1926 due to her coma-state.

Striking Similarity: Stephen King and 237

There's a strange reccuring number in a few Stephen King cinematic adaptations. The number 237.

The scary-ass room in The Shining (1980) in number 237.

In Stand By Me (1986) when the boys are collecting their money, the total amount they gather is $2.37.

In The Shawshank Redemption (1994), Red's cell number is 237.

In The Green Mile (1999) John Coffey's prisoner number is 237, and in Dreamcatcher (2003) the lisence plate on the spaceship is UFO237. OK I made up the last two, but the others are for real.

Striking Similarity: Mike Starr as Acid Reflux Guy...

I've been afraid to post this Striking Similarity because it demonstrates just how SICK I am. For realz.

Meet Mike Starr. I only know him in 2 very specific roles. The first is Crocker, the mover from Funny Farm (1988). A minor role, but memorable nonetheless. The second is as Joe Mentalino in Dumb and Dumber (1994).

Here's the thing about Mike. I think he might be a victim of typecasting. In both movies we see Mike as this very rough-around-the-edges-character. But here's the crazy part. In both movies we see Mike poppin' Rolaids/Tums/misc. indegestion pills. Just wanna point out too that Mike seems to always be poppin' pills in vehicles. What in the effers is up with that?!

I don't know what's worse, Mike being so specifically typecast, or me noticing something like this. Was the casting agent for Dumb and Dumber like: "OMG I totally know the perfect rough-around-the-edges person who is great at popping large amounts of pills when his character is under stress and seems to be suffering from indegestion!"...

Weeiiiiird. Check out Mike in Funny Farm (5:00 mark for pill-poppin') and in Dumb and Dumber (last 10 seconds to watch him munch the capsules).

Striking Similarity: Strolling Solo

Ok, go with me on this one. This is a trend I noticed in movie posters, which is basically this - tough, tortured-looking guys walking alone with weapons. I guess this is how the filmmakers are trying to tell us who the hero is of the movie. But notice it's always a 'dark' hero who has some serious issues.

Hit the jump for FOUR more examples...

Exhibit A - A new version of the poster for She's Out Of My League, starring our Ottawa boy, and my honey-bunny (unbeknownst to him) Jay Baruchel. Note the hot girl leaning into the apprehensive guy.

Exhibit B - The poster for The Proposal (2009). Again, note the Canadian boy Ryan Reynolds shying away from a sexy mama.

Dinner For Schmucks Trailer!

Awhile ago, Chantale told y'all about this remake of a French film, starring Paul Rudd and Steve Carell, and now we have a trailer! Hooray!

Dinner for Schmucks is coming in July, and these two actors haven't steered us wrong yet - so we'll be first in line!

Here's the poster as well...

Geez, that really reminds me of something... If I could only put my finger on it...

Ok so that last one is a bit of a stretch...

Striking Similarity: Do the Hustle (in a musical broadway-style medley)!

This is so obscure and random and really, truly demonstrates our level of sickness when it comes to movie obsession. But we're not ashamed. We're owning it, so here goes...

Today we're comparing Death Becomes Her and Sister Act 2. Here's what we found:

* Both were released in 1992
* Both comedies
* Both have Opulent Openings which involve big broadway-style performances
* Both performances involve a medley of songs
* Both medley's used the disco hit 'The Hustle' in the medley

Now, you're either thinking one of two things...

1. You both need to go get your freaking heads checked, then afterwards go get lives
or
2. You two are amazingly awesome and truly live up to your Cin-Ob Supreme titles!

We're hoping it's the latter.

Behold, the Opulent Opening/Medley bustin'/Hustlin' from Sister Act 2:

Now watch Meryl Streep throw in 'The Hustle' into her lovely little self-obsessed performance:

Striking Similarity: Harold and Kumar VS. Tommy Boy

Aiiight Cin-Obs... It's time for another Striking Similarity! Today's choice: Tommy Boy (1995) vs. Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle (2004).

First up is Tommy Boy. The scene is unforgettable. For those of you who saw it, you prolly had a larf just as we did. Tommy and Richard are on the road - in Richard's precious car, of course. Aaaand cue horrific moment...

So, nine years later, we're sittin' down to watch this movie everyone's been telling us we 'just have to see!!!', and whatta ya know?! We find ourselves larfing at yet another wild-animal-in-car-while-passenger-and-driver-shite-their-pants-with-fear-and-nearly-die moment. The film, Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle. The scene, spectacular. Enjoy!

Striking Similarity: The Matrix Revolutions VS District 9 VS Avatar

Exhibit A - The Matrix Revolutions (2003) gave us an army of badass robot suits, controlled by guys inside. I wanted one immediately. But I also thought they were cute. Is that weird?

Exhibit B - In District 9 (2009) we got this hardcore piece of alien technology... hmmm whadda ya know? A robot suit that you jump into and run amok! God, I was so excited when he hopped in that baby to kick some MNU arse.

Catch a glimpse of the guy takin' it for a ride at the 1:50 mark.

Exhibit C - Avatar (2009) showed us the biggest A-Hole in the world, running around Pandora in his ...you guessed it... robot suit! Check out this character profile for some little clips. This example is a lot less loveable, since I wanted to feed this jerk to one of the alien creatures the whole way through.

UPDATE! Cin-Ob Jonathan (and reigning Cin-Ob Supreme) has given us another example!

Exhibit D - Aliens (1986) gives us yet another robotic suit that whoops ass! (Also a James Cameron film, so he's borrowing from himself for Avatar!)

Anyone know of any other examples of this robot-suit phenomenon?
I'm sure there's more out there!

Chanty here... I thought of another one - The baddie from Innerspace (1987)...

BOOYAAAA!!

Striking Similarity: Harry Potter VS Bridget Jones

Scottish actress Shirley Henderson plays Moaning Myrtle, the distraught toilet ghost in a few Harry Potter films. She cries the day away in the bathroom (and sometimes lusts after Hogwarts students in the tub). Perv.

Henderson ALSO has a large supporting role in Bridget Jones' Diary (2001) where she is introduced as "Jude... who spends most of her time in the loo, crying over fuck-wit boyfriends."

What kind of type casting is THAT?

Striking Similarity: Duck Soup vs Big Business

Wow, Hipstercrite... what a choice! Let's all enjoy a moment from the Marx Brothers 1933 film Duck Soup. These guys were pioneers in physical comedy, and inspired many gags in films to come.

Exhibit A - Duck Soup (1933)

Exhibit B - Big Business (1988)

I know this is TV, but I can't help but include it as an example:

Striking Similarity: John Lennon vs Dane Cook

Exhibit A: The famous 1980 Rolling Stone cover of Yoko Ono and John Lennon embracing, photographed by Annie Leibovitz.

Exhibit B: A recreation by Jessica Alba and Dane Cook for one of the promotional posters for Good Luck Chuck (2007). I guess Dane wasn't brave enough to go bare-bottomed like John. Too bad.

Striking Similarity: Disney Déja-Vu

This video blew us away! Disney sure was lazy, just shoving new characters into an old template, and voilà! A new movie! See what we mean... watch the video.
