Felicia: That, my darling, is my most treasured posession in the whole wide world.
Bernadette: What is it?
Felicia: Well, a few years ago I went on a pilgrimmage backstage to an ABBA concert, hoping to grab an audience with her Royal Highness Agnetha. Well, when I saw her ducking into the ladies loo, naturally I followed her in. And after she'd finished her business I ducked into the cubicle only to find she'd left me a little gift sitting in the toilet bowl.
Bernadette: What are you telling me? This is an ABBA turd?
~ Guy Pearce and Terence Stamp in Priscilla: Queen of the Desert (1994)
Although D-Hoff already had the role at this point, what you're seeing is a screen test to see how the makeup, wigs, and outfits looked on film.
I read in this movie's triv that Dusty did a lot of things in character before filming, to see how believable Dorothy Michaels really was, including going to his neice's school play, or something like that. People thought he was the aunt.
This might be one of the ugliest drag queens in cinematic history, but she's mighty high on our list of faves.
Admittedly I only knew Tony Curtis from Some Like It Hot (1959), but I do recognize that he was a Hollywood legend for his many many other films.
Tony passed away yesterday at the age of 85
If you know us at all, you know how much we love drag queens. Even the extremely ugly ones. We don't discriminate. *sniffle* Check out Tony and Jack Lemmon in one of the most classic comedies ever.
Stephanie, snagging the Cin-Ob Supreme title for the second time, has chosen very wisely for her post of choice today. She specifically requested some sweet transvestite action. How could we refuse? We cherish this cult favie film and absolutely adore the gender bending song and dance. Or if you're naive lil' Brad, some "folk dancing." Yeah right.
We need to talk about this movie. Three little words that make our drag queen lovin' hearts go pitter patter...To Wong Foo.
And where is the body?...Thanks to this 1995 gem, we can forever enjoy Snipes, Swayze and Leguizamo in skirts, wigs and press-on nails! Miss Noxeema Jackson, Miss Vida Boheme and Miss Chi-Chi Rodriguez are career girls stranded in the small town of Snydersville after their stylish Cadillac breaks down en route to Los Angeles(despite the ladies being urged to 'go with the Corrola').
The ladies bond with the quirky folks in the town and enjoy a 'day with the girls', a 60s fashion extravaganza and of course, the Strawberry Social while their car is being repaired.
If you haven't seen this cult classic, get on it. C'mon, how else will you learn the 4 steps to becoming a queen?!
Fave Quotes:
"I'm a princess. "P" to the "R" to the "N" to the "cess". I'm a princess."
" I got a million dream lovers for every light on Broadway. When one of them goes out I just screw in another one, you know, hello good-bye."
"If I were bread, would you be my butter?"
"I'm the latina Marilyn Monroe. I've got more legs than a bucket of chicken!"
~ John Leguizamo as Chi-Chi Rodriguez in To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar (1995)
Amanda Seyfried stars in Albert Nobbs. Nobbs is a story about a woman who pretends to be a man in order to work. Set in Ireland in the 19th century, this drama, directed by Rodrigo Garcia, should be great! Period piece + drag + fighting for women's rights! YAAHH!
It's such an original concept. WOW! Chick dresses as a dude to do what she loves. It's almost never been done before. Except for She's the Man (2006) and Mulan (1998)...Yentl (1983), Victor Victoria (1982), Connie and Carla (2004), Pitch Black(2000), Shakespeare in Love (1998)... Ok, so maybe it has been done. Either way we loooove the drag. Women in drag, men in drag. We don't care. We'll take it.
This movie is the epitome of makeovers... we've already given you this one, and here's another! And guess what? There's still another one to come! GAWD we love drag queens.
Operation Decoration Storm!
To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar (1995)
Again we have a Delicious Dinner segment in which no food is actually consumed, but boy oh boy is it ever fun to watch the awkwardness at this dinner table.
Wow, we're so surprised! You've chosen Mulan as your favourite Disney leading lady! I guess we're surprised that a more classic lady didn't take the prize... as Mulan is a more modern Disney heroine. But yo... she totally rocked it and kicked some Hun ass. So she deserved it.
Belle came in second (because interspecies love is timeless), and Snow White, Ariel, and Jasmine tied for third. I personally woulda voted for Ariel, mostly because I spent most of my youth wiggling around in the pool trying to make my hair float all pretty like a mermaid.
Unfortunately Sleeping Beauty and Tink got no love at all. I get it. One is a lazy bitch and the other was a jealous insect. Ouch that was harsh.
So yeah, we're aware we've already given you a Mad Makeover from Disney's Mulan, but guess what? There's more! We showed you how she got dolled up for the matchmaker, but now in honour of Miz Mulan winning our latest poll as your favourite Disney leading lady (who knew?) we're showing you her darker side... and her transformation into a man so she can fight in place of her father. Hmmm you could almost say she's a drag king... and we love it!
Yes yes... we know... MORE DRAG QUEENS! Well ifyou don't like 'em, then you don't appreciate true performance art. They're just wonderful. Enough said.
Now watch Nathan Lane rehearsing as Starina in The Birdcage (1996). And if you still don't get it... try more gum.
As per common Cin-Ob knowledge, drag queens make for some GREAT movies. Even when they're not ACTUAL drag queens. It's irrelevant. Although it was a flippin' flop at the box office, you'd be correct in guessing it's a huge favie of ours. Drag queens, song and dance numbers, how could you possibly go wrong?
Watch this nothing-less-than-moving scene from Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001). I know we always rave about drag queens, but we just HAD to show you this gem.
In honour of Patrick Swayze, we present to you one of our favourite films. Watch Swayze, Snipes and Leguizamo turn from macho to fabulous in To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar (1995). As much as this is an amazing Opulent Opening, we just had to stick it in the Mad Makeover category, since the transformations are just brilliant.
Even though we gave you a golden nugget from this film yesterday, we just couldn't hold back. Too many mouth-watering moments of hilariousness to pick just one!
So who says training sequences always have to be martial arts, and sweaty workouts? Here's a piece of brilliant training, in which Robin Williams is teaching Nathan Lane to be a little less "swishy."
