Will Ferrell Gets His Latino On

Oh sweet Lord, a spoof of Spanish telenovelas! Love it!

Besos y Lagrimas is one of our favourite SNL skits, so we can't wait to see this feature length flick!

Armando Alvarez (Will Ferrell) has lived and worked on his father's ranch in Mexico his entire life. As the ranch encounters financial difficulties, Armando's younger brother Raul (Diego Luna), shows up with his new fiancé, Sonia (Genesis Rodriguez). It seems that Raul's success as an international businessman means the ranch's troubles are over as he pledges to settle all debts his father has incurred. But when Armando falls for Sonia, and Raul's business dealings turn out to be less than legit, all hell breaks loose as they find themselves in a war with Mexico's most feared drug lord, the mighty Onza (Gael Garcia Bernal). [IMDB]

Aaaaaamazing! Great latino actors too, some of our faves!

We really loved Jack Black when he went Mexican in Nacho Libre (2006), so we think Ferrell will knock it outta the park. I can't quite tell from the trailer, but it looks like the majority of the movie will be in actual Spanish... which some people might hate, but personally I will devour because it adds to the hilarity of the spoofiness. Yeah. It's a word.

Come on! Will Ferrell rolling his rrrrrs and being all Rico Suave. You gotta love it!

And it you really think about it, this is like Spanish Step Brothers. The living-with-parents loser with the successful brother?

What do you think? Will you give it a chance? Dale una oportunidad? Te parece gracioso? Ooops sorry.

Dazzling Dance: Dance Flick

Sugar Bear was one of my favie peeps in this whole movie. Next to Mme. Cameltoé , of course. Sug is tough. He's hungry. He is motherfuckin' FAT.

We shat our pants laughing every time he graced the screen. Needless to say, we were mighty excitey to experience an entire dance number, full of poppin' and lockin' and major belly floppin'. Check it out!

Young Frankenstein: A Classic Review

I have a real problem with Young Frankenstein. I can't stop watching it. No really. I can't.  I snatched it up at the store for a great price 2 years ago, having never seen it, but knowing of its legendary status. I also don't need to know anything more than "Mel Brooks" to buy a DVD.

Chantale and I watched it once, enjoyed it thoroughly, and moved on with our lives.

One night before bed, I pulled it off the shelf out of boredom with my usual bedtime selection, and popped it in. In the dark, by myself, I enjoyed this movie much more than I had the first time. Wait, not like that. Get your head outta the gutter. I mean with no distractions, I saw it for its true genius.

Brooks has mastered the spoof genre, and no filmmaker can even come close to his talent anymore. I should point out that Brooks directed, but Gene Wilder wrote the script and starred.

The story follows Frederick Frankenstein as he inherits the estate of his deceased Grandfather, the famous loon who did the crazy experiments and shamed his family. Fred doesn't pronounce his name the same either, more like Frahnk-en-steen, to distance himself from his family history. This joke runs throughout the movie, prompting Igor (Marty Feldman) to claim mockingly that his name is pronounced Eye-gore. "You're puttin' me on!"

With the help of Eye-gore and a beautiful lab assistant named Inga (Teri Garr), Frederick sets out to understand his Grandfather's work, and gets himself fully wrapped up in it, creating his own monster (Peter Boyle), much to the chagrin of the traumatized townspeople.

The movie is chalk-full of classic Frankenstein references, as well as an older, subtler brand of humour that you just don't see anymore.

When the monster breaks out (sorry I ruined it) he goes on a bender through the town and shenanigans ensue. Actually, it's some physical humour that films have been lacking lately. This includes a visit to a poor blind man, played by a young Gene Hackman, wherein the monster is the subject of various classic gags such as hot soup in the crotch.

Shot in black and white for effect, Young Frankenstein achieves exactly what it was meant to do -- make you forget you're watching something from the 70s. The work that went into sets, props, costuming, and even the lighting and shadow, are ultra impressive. Wilder has even mastered the attitude, gestures, and slight nuances of an old-timey scientist, and he doesn't forget to add the hokey stuff that made the original great. "Give my creation LIIIIFE!"

With added characters like Frau Blucher, naaaaayy, (played by Cloris Leachman) the housekeeper, and Madeline Kahn as the fiancée, you won't be bored, even for a moment.

I've now watched it about a billion times, and I notice something new and hilarious every time. I highly recommend this black and white gem, but I caution you to watch it with your eyes wide open, as well as your mind. You don't need to have seen the originals to find this was amazing and funny. Just take it for what it is. A comedic masterpiece.

Have you seen it? What did you think?

Exquisite Extra: Galaxy Quest

Galaxy Quest (1999) is in my top 3 favourite sci-fi flicks, so anything extra I can get from the movie, I'm all for it!

Check out these scenes that didn't make the final cut, that will leave you grinning. See Dr. Lazarus' sleeping arrangements, a funny Q&A with Tech Sargeant Chen, some desperately needed dialogue from Rainn Wilson's small character, and some Sigourney cleavage - if you're into that.

Memorable Monologue: Family Guy: Blue Harvest

"A long time ago, but somehow in the future...

It is a period of civil war and renegade paragraphs floating through space. There's cool space battles, and the bad guy is the good guy's dad. But you don't find that out 'til the next episode. And the hot chick is really the sister of the good guy, but they don't know it and they kiss. Which is kind of messed up. I mean, what if they had done it instead of just kissed? Angelina Jolie kissed her brother. Yeah, she did. You know it, I know it, and her dad knows it. That's why they hardly ever talk anymore. You can run away to Africa, but you can't run away from the truth. Oh, by the way, here's a tip for you: when this is over, go out and rent the movie Gia. She's way naked in it, and makes out with another chick and everything. It's awesome. I stumbled across it late night on HBO after I had just got back from hockey, and I almost fainted. But I digest...

Princess Leia was coming back from buying space groceries when this happened..."

Opulent Opening: Scary Movie 2

We love a good spoof. Not surprising.

Not only does this Opulent Opening from Scary Movie 2 (2001) contain a happy-go-lucky singalong that turns gangsta, but it also has Natasha Lyonne as a demon child, an extended piss joke (and a poo joke for that matter), James Woods, Andy Richter, and some major projectile vomiting. Is it weird that those things combined made for a great scene? No, I've decided it's not weird.

Brilliant Bloopers: Shaun of the Dead

What can I say about this brilliant zombie flick? It's such a hilarious movie that introduced us to one of our most recent favie comedians, Simon Peg.

You all know by now that we're all over the 'Special Features'. We get massively peeved off (yes, I said peeved) when DVDs don't offer any Exquisite Extras. Shaun of the Dead didn't disappoint... Here are some bloopies that'll get ya giggling.

Tantalizing Trivia: Young Frankenstein

Many of the props in the house and laboratory scenes of Young Frankenstein (1974) are the actual props from the original 1931 version of Frankenstein.

Colourful Cameo: Britney Spears in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me

Since she was pop-culturally relevant at the time, Brit appeared in the opening scene of Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999). I realize she ain't quite relevant anymore, but that doesn't make the memory of this moment any less hilarious.

Not only is she riding on the backs of beefcakes like a total douchwallet, but she turns out to be a femme-bot. I remember this moment in theatres, and people hooted and cheered like I'd never seen a crowd react before. It was awesome. And of course, I love Austin's pink fluffy scrunchies.

Memorable Monologue: Austin Powers in Goldmember

"It did sound a little wet, there didn't it? Right at the end! Oooh! Heh heh heh. Let's have a smell, all right? Oh, everyone likes their own brand, don't they? Oh, this is magic! Hmmm, wafting, wafting. Ok, analysis. Ooh, smells like carrots in throw-up! Oh that could gag a maggot! It smells like hot sick ass in a dead carcass! Even stink would say that stinks! You know when you go into an apartment building and you smell the other people's cooking on each floor and you go 'What are they cookin'?' That, plus crap!"

Quotable Quote: Jane Austen's Mafia!

"I'm not my father, Diane, just like you're not your father. If we were our fathers, what we did last night would only be legal in Arkansas."

Vampire's Suck! Let's Hope This Movie Doesn't!

It was only a matter of time before the vamp craze was spoofed! And we're jazzed! We love Twilight and all things vampire, but we're also good sports and love to see those things totally made fun of!

Not to mention we're spoof JUNKIES. Like this... or this nugget of goodness...oh yeah and this puppy right here.

Coming in August of this year is Vampire's Suck, starring nobody I recognize except Ken Jeong, which looks hilarious. I also love their take on the "pale black vampire." Check out the trailer to see what the hell I'm talking about.

My only issue, as I've said before, is the nonsensical addition of random pop-culture references, ie Lady Gaga. WHY OH WHY? We're spoofing vamps, not everything random that's currently happening in society. Pure stupidity.

But either way, we'll give this movie a chance. And finally all you Twilight haters will have something you can enjoy and take your rage out on. But then you'll be pissed when you realize that all the chicks dig the spoof versions of Edward, Jacob, and James - because deal with it - they're still hot in this movie.  YOU JUST CAN'T WIN!

Also, let's address the haters' argument about older women oggling these young guys. Let me just remind you men - you've been doing that forever in films. Olsen Twins, anyone?

Colourful Cameo: Motley Crue in Disaster!

Here we have a special stop-motion-animation cameo appearance by Motley Crue. Yeah. I guess they need gigs BADLY!

Anyway, nobody has heard of the spoof Disaster! (2005) except us, or so I believe. I pulled this one out of a bin for ONE DOLLAR, because I knew it had potential. And it was awesome. The animation is not top-notch, but the humour is raunchy and filthy, with a sex scene that rivals Team America.

So Motley Crue appears throughout this movie in a pointless cameo (vocal cameo I should say, since their stop-motion counterparts are horribly done). With the end of the world coming, the band decides to throw the most bitchin' rock concert ever. Ummm ok.

Check out a clip of their Colourful Cameo that involves toilet humour, booze, and general stupidity.

Delicious Dinner: Scary Movie 2

This has to be one of the creepiest, foul and gross characters ever to show up on screen. Chris Elliott plays Hanson (whom we've already featured as a Charismatic Character) an amazingly gross yet hilarious butler!

Check out this Delicious...errrmmmm... or rather Disgusting Dinner in which Hanson gets his gnarly fingies into EVERYTHING. Tim Curry sits at the head of this meal which has nearly all it's guests gagging. Superb. Bon Appetit!

Sublime Soundtrack: Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story

Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.

Oh man, did this movie surprise us. As much faith as we have in Judd Apatow and John C. Reilly, they just don't make spoofs like they used to. We're SO done with these "Not Another 'blank' Movies." They just throw in every pop-culture reference they can think of, and have entirely lost the true meaning of spoofing. I mean honestly, what does Amy Winehouse have to do with a Disaster movie? Ridiculous.

Back to the film at hand. Walk Hard had a brilliant soundtrack, full of original songs that fit the decades they are emulating PERFECTLY. Many critics praised the soundtrack, saying the songs were not only funny, catchy and well-written, but perfectly reflected the genres and times of the film.

The soundtrack was nominated for both a Grammy and Golden Globe Award and was nominated and won the Sierra Award for Best Song in a Motion Picture from the Las Vegas Film Critics Society. (Wikipedia)

Some of the influences (in story AND in music) of Dewey Cox are:

Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Jim Morrison, Brian Wilson, Glen Campbell, Ray Charles, Jerry Lee Lewis, Donovan, John Lennon, Sir Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr, but mainly Johnny Cash.

Reilly was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance. Not only was it a comedic triumph, but he played guitar and sang his own songs.

The film was actually a flop, earning less at the box office than the film's budget, but received critical acclaim later, especially for the brilliant soundtrack.

Here you see Dewey's early music in the 50s (as a 14 year-old. Yes. Hilarious). His utterly offensive and blasphemous Take My Hand. As Dewey's unsupportive father tells him, "You know who's got hands? The DEVIL! And he uses 'em for holdin' things!"

Below we get a taste of Dewey's 70s Bob Dylan phase, when he's wacked out on drugs and writing very "deep" songs.

Lyrics:
Mailboxes drip like lampposts in the twisted birth canal of the coliseum
Rim job fairy teapots mask the temper tantrum
O' say can you see 'em
Stuffed cabbage is the darling of the Laundromat
'N the sorority mascot sat with the lumberjack
Pressing passing stinging half synthetic fabrication of his-- Time
The mouse with the overbite explained how the rabbits were ensnared
'N the skinny scanty sylph trashed the apothecary diplomat
Inside the three-eyed monkey within inches of his toaster oven liiife...

Not to be missed is the title track, Walk Hard, and the lovely Let's Duet, a wonderful piece of harmonious, hilarious innuendo.

Ferocious Fight: Scary Movie

Anna Faris + Wayans bros + spoof genre + Matrix references + aerial Riverdancing + complete and utter ridiculousness = One of our favie spoofs eva!

Watch Cindy whoop some 'Scream-monster-serial killer-guy' ass in this scene from Scary Movie (2000)...
